Character Background

• History: Wiki | Continued Timeline Write Up
• Core Relationships:
Benzo: Benzo was the right hand of Vander in the Landes, owner of a pawn shop, who took Ekko in after his parents died, presumably in the same uprising that killed Vi and Powder/Jinx’s parents. He loved him like a father, and they had a very strong bond, even though Ekko was too smart for his own good and would eavesdrop on private conversations Benzo had all the time. Watching Benzo die greatly traumatized Ekko to the point of why he wasn’t there with Vi and the others to try and rescue Vander from Silco. He wonders even now if he had gone with them if things would have turned out differently.

Vi: Vi was Ekko’s big sister in every way that mattered (she even nicknamed him “Little Man”) and he hero-worshipped her. He wanted to fight like her, be tough like her, and stick up for his friends the way she did. Then he thought Silco had killed her like Mylo and Claggor. With no one left to stand up against Silco, he took what Vi had taught him about standing against bullies and formed the Firelights, defending the innocent people of Zaun from Silco and the Enforcers alike. When he learns she is alive, he is hurt at first, but believes her story about what happened to her and trusts Caitlyn purely on Vi’s word alone despite her being a rich Piltover Enforcer. He may be more cynical and cautious now than he was as a child, but he’ll always put his faith in Vi.

Powder/Jinx: His childhood best friend turned into one of the worst enemies he ever had. They bonded as amateur engineers and inventors, who wanted to prove themselves to everyone around them, to show them they were worthy of being part of their group. They are like two sides of the same coin and the flipping of the coin decided their fate. Ekko didn’t go to the Shimmer factory because Vi told him to stay back, Powder did. And because Powder went, their friendship would effectively die that day just like Mylo, Claggor, and Vander (and Ekko assumed Vi). She became Jinx and he mourned her. He even put a mural of Powder up along with everyone else they had lost to Silco’s organization. He effectively separated who Powder once was from who Jinx is now. Or so he thought he did until they fought on the Bridge of Progress and he couldn’t finish her off because for once his past with her stopped him from doing what he knew needed to be done. He really doesn’t want to think about what that means.

Firelights: The organization has had a powerful effect on Ekko as a person. When everyone else was gone, he had to be the one to step up. He had to be the one to keep people going, to remind others that they could keep fighting, and bring likeminded people together. The other members of the Firelights trust him and put their faith in his ability to lead them and to always prioritize what really matters, the everyday people of Zaun who are living as best they can against the worst kind of odds. He had to focus on fighting AND surviving, on defensive measures not all out assaults. He had to change the way he looked at the world when before he had been so eager to follow Vi’s way of punching first and figuring out the rest later. Ekko wouldn’t be who he is today if he hadn’t taken that stand and the other members of the team, like Scar and Eve, hadn’t believed in him.

Character Personality Through Key Moments

(2+) Positive Experiences:
-- Ekko is a strong leader as seen by how he runs the Firelights and the hideout where they are slowly working to grow food and provide better air due to the extremely rare tree growing there. He commands his team, but also knows how to trust in their abilities and delegate duties as needed. He doesn’t try to do everything himself. He also had to be convinced to accept that maybe speaking to the council in Piltover might have an effect and change some minds, but instead of allowing Vi or Caitlyn to speak for his group, he demands he get to do it himself to make sure the needs and demands of his side are heard clearly.
-- Ekko is also pragmatic in that he is able to look at situations from all sides, measuring the pros and cons of their actions and deciding which course is the most effective. He knows that just punching his way around isn’t going to accomplish anything, and thus the Firelights are a lot more strategic in their attacks to disrupt the shimmer trade and the corrupt enforcers working for Silco, like the hit and run attack on the ship carrying secret shimmer cargo.
-- Ekko is creative in that he uses what those of Zaun have available to them and engineering useful inventions to help them. Like the hoverboards he invented for the Firelights to use in their attacks against Silco’s organization or the stopwatch he always carries with him.
-- Ekko is also well-grounded. Even though he suffered a lot of trauma and loss in his past, he refuses to allow himself to be stuck in the past, living those traumas over and over. He also doesn’t spend his time focused on the Could Bes of the future. He knows what horrors exist in the past and he’s seen what people like Silco have done trying to “create a future” for Zaun. He has chosen to focus on the the Present, and the people living now. He wants to make things better for them and give them something to thrive for, not just a means to survive.

(2+) Negative Experiences:
-- Ekko can be judgmental, especially toward people from Piltover or who are connected to the Enforcers. He doesn’t trust people from the city above to care about or try to do right by those in Zaun, but considering how Piltover had oppressed Zaun and the Enforcers are often abusing their power or corrupted by Silco’s money and power, it’s not hard to see why.
-- Ekko is aggressive. He’s not someone who believes that just talking things out will work out for them. He’s not as impulsive as he once was, but he still thinks that fighting and assaults are how he can push back against the two sides oppressing the people he’s protecting. He grew up seeing people fight for their survival and for their reputations and for as much as he’s changed, he hasn’t completely moved away from this mindset. Vi and Caitlyn had to convince him that speaking at the council meeting might have any kind of effect on things, because he does not trust that the council will change how the people of Zaun have been treated just by being asked to do so. When you were raised in a world of violence and fighting, it will always be a part of you.

Deer Country Attributes

• Canon Powers: Ekko is a normal human with no special abilities, but he is a genius and knows how to build very useful and effective tools with very little supplies. He is also a capable hand-to-hand fighter and knows how to use his size and speed to his advantage.
• Blood Type: Paleblood
• Omen: An albino great-horned owl named Tempo. She’s protective, but calm, always watching, and really good at being in places without people noticing despite being bright white. A mom-type with a hidden aggressive side.
• Blessed Day: November 15th (the day they discovered the tree in the sewers of Zaun).
• Patron Pthumerian: The Tower
• Blood Power Manifestation: Ekko’s paleblood abilities will be related to seeing random visions through touch. He can see other’s pasts in vague, but sensory-heavy visions. The closer these memories are to the surface, the stronger they are for Ekko to experience. They take a lot out of him because of the sensory overload of these memories, and he’ll have to rest for a bit after experiencing one. Another effect of his paleblood will be empathic dreamwalking. If he’s near someone having extreme emotions (especially negative/traumatic ones) while asleep he can be accidentally pulled into their dream with them, experiencing their feelings as they are. It would take time for him to learn to control this and it would allow him to eventually break people out of nightmares into calmer and more restful sleep. But should he come into contact with someone else’s blood he will gain insight into their deepest wants/regrets, through visions of how they wish specific events in their life had gone. It will take some time for him to recognize these aren’t memories and instead more like daydreams of what people wish their lives were like or things they wish they could change. He will not have all of these to start, and will slowly building into these as time goes, especially regarding control.
